Taken directly from assignment: Diversity and Lifespan Development (50 points) Students will select a diverse social group (see definition below), and research information with academic integrity (see definition below) focusing on the specific developmental influences experienced by members of the diverse social group on a specific aspect of psychological development. Due Date: Students will write a summary of the information, and upload it on Canvas. The summary must be uploaded by March 18. Requirements: Typed using professional style, 12pt font. Minimum two pages, double-spaced. All information used from other sources must be cited in the summary, using APA format (see the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association). Academic Integrity: The information must come from a source with academic integrity or through an individual with first-hand knowledge. The source must have some expertise in the subject, gained through formal education, research, or significant life experience. In other words, they should know what they are speaking/writing about. If students do an interview, they will also be required to incorporate some supporting background information from a source with academic integrity. In other words, students must do background research on the subject before doing the interview and include the background information in the summary. For example: We could look at how the experience of being either the child, or the parents in a (Muslim, or low SES, or bi-racial, or undocumented, or same-sex) household and how this influences a specific aspect of the person’s psychological development. There are many diverse social groups and development topics to choose from. Try to find a group and topic that is interesting to you and the assignment will be satisfying. The information below will help to explain the above assignment. Included will be the definitions of diversity, dominant group and diverse social group as they apply to this assignment. Diversity- when a person has one or more significant self-concept differs from the self-concepts of the dominant group. Diverse Social Group – a group of people that share one or more significant self-concept that differs from the significant self-concepts of the dominant group. Dominant group – The group within a society with power, privileges, and social status. This group controls the value system and rewards within the society. The dominant group is often in the majority, but not necessarily. I describe the dominant group in the USA, using significant self-concepts, in the following way: Race: white Gender: cisgender male Religion: Christian Sexual Orientation: heterosexual Education: Bachelor’s degree plus Socio-Economic Status: middle class and above Citizenship Status: documented American citizenship Political Affiliation: Democrat or Republican Mental Health: free of mental disorders Physical Abilities: Fully functioning Grading Criterion: Following instructions.
