INSTRUCTIONS:
Based upon your reading of ‘An Unquiet Mind’, respond to the questions listed below. Responses should reflect knowledge from the field as noted in the course textbook or class materials and not just your personal thoughts. Make sure to reference page numbers from the text (i.e., p. 233) to draw upon research and practice to support your response. The final product should be an integrated paper with an introduction, body, and conclusion with complete sentences and paragraphs. The final paper should be approximately 3-5 pages in length and adhere to APA 6th Edition formatting (i.e. 12 pt. Times New Roman font, double spaced, title page, headers, etc.). You will need to submit your paper in the dropbox on CANVAS by December 14th. All papers will be scanned to check for plagiarism. Late papers will be accepted with a 10% loss of points for each day the paper is late. A. Introduction Provide a brief summary of novel, covering pages 124-219. B. Body Respond to the questions posed below: 1. Discuss the role that Kay’s family and peers play in her recovery and the impact of mental illness on them. Address the impact her grief and loss had on her recovery. Provide examples from the novel. 2. Why did Kay Jamison feel the need to keep her mental health diagnosis confidential for so long? Reference the novel. 3. How important is achieving vocational goals to the identity and wellbeing of many individuals with severe mental illness? What role does public and self-stigma play in limiting Kay’s potential? Provide a rationale for your response. 4. How does the picture of profound mental illness presented by Kay differ from its stereotypical representation in popular literature and in films? How is it similar? Provide examples. 5. Kay stated that a “major goal has been to really try and make a difference in how the illness is seen and treated"(Philadelphia Inquirer, 9/18/95). In your opinion, has she succeeded? Provide a rationale. Which of your preconceptions were changed by reading her story? Which of your preconceptions were supported by reading her story? Provide examples to support your responses. C. Conclusion There were several major themes within the novel. Describe one of the major themes: Stigma, Dualism, Gender, Professionalism, role reversal, self- acceptance. This section should be no less than 7 -10 sentences in length.
