TOPIC TWO
A REVIEW OF CLOUD COMPUTING AND CONSTRUCTION
1.0 Introduction
The presentation of visualization technologies complemented by building information management (BIM) constantly evolve and impact the old practices in the construction sector as well as in the oil and gas industry (Anumba & Wang, 2012, pp. 131). In consequence, the promised adoption of cloud computing is expected to bring about a broad range of technological improvement, that will positively impact and spur the construction sector to an elevated era of technological advancement. Vouk (2008, pp. 238) asserts that the incorporation of cloud computing technologies in a building project is significant because it helps to enhance the level of cooperation among projects stakeholders as well as creating a positive return on the initial investment in the technology as a result of reduced omissions and errors. Nonetheless, BIM technologies in the construction sector have received substantial criticism since it is regarded as a standalone system framework that complicates the efforts of projects stakeholders from accessing a general set of data (Li et al., 2008, pp. 916). Additionally, the initial investment into the adoption and incorporation of BIM is considerably high.
For that reason, the emergence of cloud computing technologies can be described as a coup in the construction sector, since the technology is regarded as a tool capable of addressing the shortcomings of the BIM systems. According to Anumba and Wang (2012, pp. 135), cloud computing introduces a new enhanced aspect of collaboration and cooperation, by acting as a proper and improved interaction platform for project stakeholders. It is fundamental to recognize that so little review has been done in regards to cloud computing and construction. As a result, this paper aims to provide a comprehensive review, most notably regarding identifying ways of improving the use of cloud computing and acknowledging future research points.
