A REVIEW OF AUTOMATION AND ROBOTICS IN CONSTRUCTION

1.0  Introduction

Regarding the construction sector, the extent of adoption of automation and robotics systems can be reasonably extensive, for instance, it includes the life cycle of the construction project, from planning, designing, construction, operation and deconstruction of the building. As a consequence, this encompasses the use of automation and robotics systems all through the construction period, from the automated process of designing, the provision of projected cost estimates, through the availability of construction schedules and finally, project management aided by planning software to the machines deployed during the on-site operations that are controlled intelligently. Nonetheless, Martinez et al. (2008, pp. 195) asserts that it is fundamental to acknowledge that the implementation of automation and robotics technologies can be different from one construction phase to another. In reality, the availability of CAD has led to the constant and frequent use of automated designing systems; nevertheless, the adoption of automation and robotics technology for on-site operations is still novel (Ngo & Schioler, 2006, pp. 834). And so, the most significant benefits of applying automation and robotics systems in the construction sector include; productivity enhancement as a result of cost-efficiency, provision of quality work due to availability of skilled labor force, improvement of the safety measures, improvement of the on-site conditions, discharge of workers from uncomfortable working stations, etc.

2.0  On-site use of Automation and Robotics systems

Songergaard and Feringa (2017, pp. 264) notes that a building is constructed through various stages of the process from excavation, through the construction of...
