A Public Whipping of Slaves in Lexington, Missouri

In chapter 11 of 'Give me Liberty', Foner shows an image of overseers punishing slaves in a public whipping session. I am compelled to believe that working in the field under gang groups; slaves lived in severe conditions where cruel supervisors would supervise them. The image illustrates the harsh treatment of slaves and the weak legal structures that protected their rights.
