A Discussion of the Writings of Irving, Hawthorne, and Poe

According to Qudratova and Hulkar, Irving, Hawthorne, and Poe are considered renowned authors of the nineteenth century (17). As part of the early literature authors in America, these authors contributed significantly to the principle of American literacy through their distinctive styles of writing as well as different literary forms and themes. In addition, these three authors are renowned due to their short compositions and support writing part of their authentic and full-fledged careers. This paper summarizes the beliefs of these writers and discusses how they contributed to the Age of Reason and American literature.

According to Fash, the writings of Irving, Hawthorne, and Poe indicate that these writers were incredibly inspired by the Romantic Movement (19). The Romantic Movement refers to one of the significant movements in culture, art, politics, literature, philosophy, and music towards centering on the spontaneous, subjective, and individual (Cîrstea 149). The romanticist type of writing stimulated self-awareness, examination, investigation, and emphasis on inner feelings and direct interaction with nature. However, the three writers had different themes, focuses, and writing styles. For instance, while Irving was a light romantic author, a writing style categorized by hopefulness, Hawthorne and Poe were termed dark romantic writers. This is because most of their writings were associated with pessimism characterizing the world as full of mystery, darkness, horror, suffering, and evil. Additionally, while most of the writings by Irving focus more on humor and satire, most of the papers by Hawthorne and Poe focused on mystery, evil, sin, and crime. Furthermore, Irving is considered a sentimental aristocrat characterized by much interest in the past, folklore, and landscape, while Hawthorne and Poe held different opinions of the past.

Dauer stated that even with their difference, these authors significantly impacted American literature, altering some of the perspectives that many people held initially (591). This is because these authors employed different techniques to develop good bits of work that, apart from making them renowned, contributed considerably to the growth of American literature. For instance, these authors employed different tones, figurative language, and themes to create fantastic imaginary stories and poems, changing the individual's view of American literature.
